About 77th Live

77th Live is a production of the Thai Association of Southern California (TASC), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. It is a 30-minute show about "growing up Thai in America" and premiered in August 2009 on NATtv. Its first season will consist of 6 episodes that will air once a month through the end of the year.

The show's motto is "Live Loud. Live Thai." Each episode will provide candid interviews with 2nd generation and young Thai Americans who balance assimilating into American culture with maintaining their Thai identities. We will also showcase the talents of young Thai Americans and provide timely information that is relevant to our young and vibrant demographic.

Background

In May 2009, NATtv's President, Ben Noppakun, approched TASC's President, Ben Komenkul, about developing a show geared toward 2nd generation Thai Americans and young Thai immigrants in the US. His ultimate dream was to develop and provide a platform for on-air Asian talent as well as build a workforce of young Asian-Americans with the experience and skills necessary to pursue careers in the local entertainment industry. Inspired by the idea, Ben K. enlisted the help of TASC Vice President Mona Strassburger and other contacts and 77th Live was born!

77th Live is produced and filmed in Los Angeles, CA and the show's title - 77th Live - is a reference to the fact that Los Angeles is often refered to as Thailand's 77th province, due to the fact that Los Angeles has the largest concentration of Thais outside of Thailand.

Show Format

The show is essentially divided into 3 sections. The first consists of interviews with established and up and coming Thai Americans. The interview will not only highlight their accomplishments but will also provide an in-depth look at the guests' experiences vis a vis maintaining their Thai identity in the melting pot of America.

The 2nd portion of the show will focus on "performances" of local Thai Amercians. In addition to showcasing their talents, we'll get to know more about their inspirations and goals by way of candid interviews.

And finally, we dedicate 1/3 of our show to issues that are relevant to our demographic - from where to go for some great Thai food in LA to how to save money in the recession. These segments include:

"Did You Know" - explore various aspects of Thai culure

"Tongue Thai" - teach a Thai word or phrase to unsuspecting passers-by

"Local Thai Food" - profile a Thai restaurant in Los Angeles

"77th Addition" - timely news information on finance, health and wellness and pop culture
